This month, we’re chatting with Dave – master of the long drive and self-declared “king of the three-putt.” He’s been part of Morton Golf Society since 2021 and is known for bombing it off the tee… and then doing his best work with a putter from six feet. Whether he’s cracking jokes on the 18th or sneaking a cheeky sausage roll at the turn, Dave brings energy and laughs to every round.
Morton Golf Society has grown into more than just a group of weekend warriors. We’re a proper golf family – a mix of seasoned swingers and enthusiastic hackers who play for the love of the game (and maybe a little bragging rights). It’s a place where everyone knows your name, your handicap, and probably your worst ever round.
We caught up with Dave to hear more about his golfing journey and what keeps him coming back to Morton events.
Q&A with Dave
Q: How did you get into golf?
My dad got me into it when I was a teenager. I used to tag along with him at the local muni, mostly to drive the buggy. Caught the bug pretty quickly, though – been hooked ever since.
Q: What made you join Morton Golf Society?
A mate of mine kept going on about it. Said it was the most fun he’d had on a golf course in years. Gave it a go, and he wasn’t wrong. Great bunch of lads, proper mix of banter and actual golf. You don’t get that everywhere.
Q: Favourite course you’ve played with the society?
Has to be Royal Cinque Ports. Wind nearly took my cap off, but I loved every second. Felt like a proper tour pro (except for the scoring, obviously).
Q: What’s the best shot you’ve ever hit?
4-iron from 210 out at Bearwood Lakes – stiffed it to about four feet. Still dining out on that one.
Q: And the worst?
Oh god, where do I start? Probably the time I tried to flop it over a bunker… and caught it so thin it went through the group ahead. They weren’t impressed.
Q: Who’s the most competitive in the group?
Gotta be Paul. Brings his own laser rangefinder, snacks labelled by hole, the lot. I swear he dreams in stableford points.
Q: What’s your go-to golf snack or drink?
Sausage roll and a Lucozade at the halfway hut. Elite combo.
Q: Any advice for someone thinking of joining?
Just do it. Doesn’t matter if you’re a 5 handicap or a 25, you’ll fit right in. As long as you can take a bit of stick and give it back, you’ll love it.
